Well, We all know they exist and we all know how to use antivirus software but still one of the most common question I get is“so how do you think I got this?”

Doing one of these actions causes most of today’s infections:

1) Installing or downloading unknown Software, Shareware or Freeware
2) Clicking on a link in an email.
3) Clicking on a link in an instant message like MSN or ICQ.
4) Clicking on a link in Facebook.
5) Not clearing Temp Internet files and cookies after surfing Internet.
6) Using an unsecured network or out of date software.

It used to be that Hackers created viruses for notoriety. It was satisfying (and sometimes lucrative) to see how many systems they could infect. Today though, it’s big business. Back in the day they wanted you to know that you were infected. Sometimes a large message would come up on the screen informing you that you had been infected, and then it would erase your hard drive. Now they don’t want you to know that they are there and go to great lengths to try and make your computer run as if nothing is wrong.

They run quietly and can perform any number of functions. Some record your keystrokes and send them back to their creator who searches for Credit Card Numbers, Bank Account numbers. They will even record your browsing history and try to send popups related to your search habits and will usually look for any other useful information they can mine from it. Sometimes they add your computer to what is known as a Bot Net. A Bot Net is a group of computers (sometimes hundreds of thousands large) that can be remotely controlled by the creator to perform tasks without the user even knowing something is going on.

So, now that you have some of the worst case scenarios and I have scared the #@&# out of you, let me give you some tips that you can do to make sure you stay uninfected.
As I have heard over and over again, most viruses can be avoided by practicing “Safe Search”. Here are some tips:

1) Don’t go to websites you don’t know:
If you have seen a website advertised then they are usually safe, but watch out for websites linked from other sites or emails sent to you by email or instant message.

2) Don’t install software from a third party site:
One of the ways these sites will try and trick you into installing a virus are to mask it as something else. Your contacts sends you a link to a website promising something cute (usually without knowing), you click on the link to view the video but are greeted with an error message saying you can’t view it because you don’t have the latest version of Flash “click HERE to download the latest version” it promises. You click and download it to your computer, you follow the instructions to a tee by double clicking on it to install but nothing happens and you still can’t see the video. That’s because that was not the latest version of Flash, but a virus, and now it’s on your computer. If a website tells you that you need a new version of Adobe Flash, shockwave or any other update\install to view the video or file, go to that softwares specific website and install it from them directly.

3) Don’t click on links in Emails, Instant Messages or Facebook:
This may sound harsh but the huge majority of viruses out there are spread this way. The best ways to spot these are generic or vague subject lines or titles. If you see an email in your inbox with the subject “funny video” or “check this out!”and the body is nothing but a link, delete it as fast as you can. Even if it comes from a friend or contact. Most of the time people don’t know they are sending these infected messages. Their computer is infected and a virus is causing it to send these messages to everyone on their contact list. However, most Email providers do scan Emails before they get to you. You can usually see this at the bottom of the email.

4) Clear your temp Internet files and cookies before you shutdown.
Many malware programs are hidden within the code of cookies and do not effect your system until you reboot. Usually these are designed to change your home page or cause uncontrollable popups.
5) Secure your computer:

Antivirus software is great, but for the most part it doesn’t kick in until there is already a problem. Same goes for Malware removal tools. Using a hardware firewall such as a Router is one of the best ways to protect your computer from online attacks. If you have a wireless router, make sure you have enabled the wireless encryption. There are also some very good software firewalls like Zonealarm that perform very well.

6) Stay up to date:
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Internet Explorer on the second Tuesday of every month. If there is a serious problem that arises, they will sometimes release before that but very rarely. Make sure you download and install these updates as they fix security holes and vulnerabilities. Don’t think your safe if you’re running a Mac either. With the recent increase in Macs market share (up 2% from 5% to7%) even Apple is recommending their users install Antivirus software.
Well there you have it hope this has helped you to understand and protect your system

The best part of pc users have at one time or another experienced poor performance or computer freezes, normally these occurrences happen at the least convenient time possible, and it is not uncommon to loose unsaved work to the blue screen of death.

There are several reasons that can cause your pc to act in this manner, but in the vast number of cases the issue is either a registry or driver problem. The registry basically allows your computer to know what programs are installed and where they are to be found on your system. Drivers on the other hand are small programs that tell your machine how to interact with the various hardware devices you have installed such as video cards and the chip set on your motherboard. mac repair london

Every time a program is uninstalled there is a chance that some odds and ends are left in the registry, with the program no longer in place this means that the registry has erroneous records, over time this can cause problems for the efficiency of your machine, slowing it down to a crawl or even causing it to crash completely in severe cases. The solution is either to use a registry repair program (several of which are available free online) or to reinstall your operating system (e.g windows).
Personally I prefer to reinstall my operating system in this set of circumstances, but if you do not have the luxury of a spare hard drive to save your important files on, you may wish to try registry repair software.

Drivers can also cause performance problems, instability and the blue screen of death can be quite common with driver conflicts or other problems. The issue is an easy one to fix, simply visit the website of the manufacturer for each component in your pc and download the most current drivers. If you already have the most current drivers and that is the cause of the problem, you may wish to revert to earlier drivers until the manufacturer deals with the problem. data recovery in london

Fragmentation of hard drive is also a very common cause of poor performance for many greenhorn pc users, The hard drive can be explained in much the same way as a filing cabinet, a hard drive that is not regularly defragmented becomes jumbled up, files are all over the place and the files are not filed in any particular order, therefore when it becomes necessary to retrieve a particular file the computer has no idea where on the drive to look for it, and ends up scanning the whole drive. Now when you consider that some programs use hundreds of files at once, it is not hard to see how this could cause your computer to behave in a slow manner or even stop responding. By defragmenting the hard drive on a regular basis of around once per month, you can ensure that your hard drive is kept in optimal order. You should also defrag every time after installing or uninstalling a program, or any other operation which involves moving large volumes of data.

Imagine that you have an old picture of your grandparents that you want cleaned up digitally. You have scanned the scratchy and grainy picture and sent it over to your friend who is quite the wizard at Photoshop instead of giving it to a studio.

Your friend does a great job at restoring the picture, shows it to you and returns the retouched picture in a CD. However, the catch is that the picture is in a PSD format which cannot be viewed using regular image viewers and you do not have Adobe Photoshop software loaded. So how do you open ?PSD File? for taking a printout?

Well, things are not quite so bleak for people in similar situations or those who simply do not wish to buy the memory-consuming expensive software. There are several ways you can preview PSD (Photoshop Document files) or even open PSD files without having the Adobe Photoshop software installed.

One of the first alternatives would be to install GIMP. GIMP or GNU Image Manipulating Program is a handy adaptable software which not only supports PSD files, serving as a PSD file viewer but is also a multipurpose tool that can be used for various image-related tasks starting with using it for simple paint purposes to restoring or fixing photographs and images.

And the best thing about GIMP is that it is free. Also, you can easily boost it with the use of plug-ins.

Another software which can be used for opening previewing PSD files without Photoshop would be the FastStone Image Viewer.

It has PSD viewing features including a host of image retouching functions such as red-eye removal, contrast and color adjustment, cropping and resizing along with lossless JPEG transition. This stable, snappy and user-friendly freeware can quite easily become the image manipulating software of your choice.

PAINT.NET is also another alternative, however, you would need to install a specific plug-in before you can open PSD files as the software does not support these by default. This plug-in can be downloaded quite easily from the official site.

PAINT.NET is quite a decent image editing tool although one point of concern would be that not all features of PSD files are supported by the plug-in that helps you open and view them.

Apart from the ones suggested here, there are several other free software available that can support the viewing of PSD files, so there is no reason to lose heart!

The term homeschooling basically refers to the process in which
one or more children of not more than 2 families are instructed by
parents or legal guardians, or a member of either household. The
laws that define homeschooling vary from State to State. The legal
requirements for establishing a homeschool also vary with the
State.

For most children, the actual process of learning begins much
before school. Many children already know their alphabets, the
names of animals, colors and other more complicated stuff before
they reach school. This is mostly due to the hard work of a member
of the family who has taken the time to teach the child.
Homeschooling is just a natural progression from here. Instead of
sending their children to a public school, parents make their own
curriculum and teach their children in ways that best suit the
child. This is homeschooling, in its most simplistic form.

Before you decide to go in for homeschooling, there are certain
important matters for consideration. First off, meet with parents
of other homeschoolers. Find out the pros and cons of
homeschooling. Then ask yourself why you would want to adopt this
method. This is a very important aspect, as the success of the
program depends on the clarity and sincerity of your purpose.

Next, it is time to consider the expenses of homeschooling. It may
cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to a few thousand
every year. More importantly, you are also effectively shutting
out any job opportunity for one of the parents. It is only obvious
that one parent will have to stay at home full time to manage the
homeschool. A home-based business however is a great alternative.

Are you qualified to take on homeschooling for your children?
Teaching is a continuation of your own learning process. With the
advent of the internet, information is aplenty. There are various
books and resources for those interested in homeschooling. Go
through the various methods of homeschooling and choose one that
is most suited to you. It helps if you know what kind of learning
style your child has. Also, find out what your child feels about
homeschooling before you start.

Every state has its own laws regarding homeschooling. For
instance, in North Carolina, you must first file a Notice of
Intent to start a home school. In this you have to mention if the
school is a Private church school or a qualified non-public
school. The persons providing the education are required to have
at least a high school diploma. You have to maintain an annual
record of the childs attendance and disease immunization. Every
year, the child is required to undergo a standardized test. Each
student attending the eleventh grade has to take a nationally
standardized test. These are the requirements in North Carolina,
but it is enough to give you a good idea of what homeschooling
entails.

Homeschooling may seem like a lot of fun and freedom from the
outside. However, things are seldom as simple as they seem.
Homeschooling is a lot of added responsibility and hard work. But,
if successful, it will forge a strong bond of love and respect
between parent and child, while providing your child with the best
form of education he needs.

You have probably noticed that whenever you choose New from the File menu in Adobe InDesign CS4, you may have noticed the option to create a new book without ever knowing exactly what a book is. Well, in fact, books are a fairly nifty feature: they allow you to take a series of related Adobe InDesign CS4 document and treat them as a single entity; a book. All documents in the book can then share resources such as paragraph and character styles, colour swatches, master pages, sections and page numbering.

Once you have created a book, by choosing File-New-Book, the Book panel is displayed. It features a panel menu with all the necessary Book options. Your first task is to add documents to the book: from the Book panel menu, choose Add Document and select the documents you want to be treated as part of the book.

There is also some useful feedback about the status of each chapter in the book by displaying an icon next to the name of each chapter. The Available icon indicates that the book may be opened by one member of the team of people using the book. The Open icon indicates that you have the book open and that no one will be able to use it until they have finished with it. The In Use icon will appear when someone else has that chapter open; this means that you have to wait until they have finished with it before you can use it. The Modified icon shows that changes have been made to the book since last time you opened it. And, finally, the dreaded Missing icon indicates that the InDesign document associated with that chapter has been moved from its original location.

When the book file is saved, the book becomes a separate entity to the documents it contains and the documents in a book do not have to reside in the same location as the book or as each other. To save a book, choose Save Book in the Book panel menu.

It is possible to replace an existing chapter of a book with another InDesign document by simply selecting an existing book chapte and choosing Replace Document from the panel menu. Next, navigate to the replacement document and double-click to select it. InDesign will then replace the selected chapter with the new document. Deleting chapters from a book is equally straightforward. Just highlight the chapter(s) and choose Remove Document from the panel menu, or click the Remove Document icon at the bottom of the Book panel.

The next step is to tell InDesign which of the documents in the book will be treated as the style source. The document elected as the style source will be used as the master document in the process known as synchronization whereby InDesign replaces the colour swatches and styles of all documents in the book with those in the style source document.

To set page numbering across the whole book, choose Book Page Numbering Options in the Book panel menu. The default is Automatically Update Page Section Numbers: this will cause InDesign to number pages in the documents within the book according to the order in which they are listed in the Book panel.

The Book panel can also serve as as a navigation aid or launch pad from which you can open any InDesign document which has been specified as a chapter of the book. To work on any chapter of a book, simply double-click the name of the chapter in the Book panel. The chapter will open like any regular InDesign document and can be closed when you have finished editing without it being removed from the book.

InDesign books are a terrific tool teams working on the same publication since the fact that a document is part of a book does not stop it from being a regular InDesign document. If a book contains five documents, five different people can work on each of those documents and then, at the end, the whole book can be preflighted, printed and output as PDF as a single unit.

Both indexes and tables of contents can also be generated for an entire book as well as for a single document. Simply design and create the table of contents or index in the normal way but activate the option Include Book Documents.
