Frederick Marckini, CEO of iProspect, said that the paradox of Web search and search engine marketing (SEM) is that properly optimized sites contain customer-specific language. “Who is talking about the language of the customer?” asked Marckini. “Only search engine marketing firms.”

Both “natural” search engine optimization and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising bring traffic. SEM firms optimize for both types of online promotion, yet all of this traffic results in conversion to buyer rates of only 2-3 percent.

Therefore, SEM firms must not only research how people are searching, but where they are searching for specific things. “When the context of the brand demonstrates the intent of the query and then the corpus of documents is restricted by topic,” Marckini said, “that search will yield an improved result.”

Paid Inclusion and Pay-Per-Click Programs

“The paid inclusion industry really started with Inktomi,” said Dennis Buchheim, Director of Inktomi Search Marketing Solutions. “It has proven to be an excellent business for us and has provided a lot of great opportunities to marketers and has been a price-leader.”

Buchheim believes that the core value of search engine marketing really has a lot to do with content in both Inktomi’s flat fee URL Submit and Pay-Per-Click (PPC) trusted feed programs.

Buchheim predicts that we will see tools every day: more search engine automation, both on the bid management and paid inclusion, more tools for submission, tracking, conversion/ROI tracking. “There is a lifetime relationship being formed with the customer, and everybody needs to remember that with the ROI process,” he said. “The tools are getting better and better, and becoming more significant.”

Chris Bolte, Strategic Alliances and Sales at Overture, said that the big trends he sees revolve around how many customers he sees coming online. “Overture has doubled from 40,000 customers a year ago to 80,000 today,” he said, “and that’s just a segment of the total market. We expect that trend to continue big-time going into 2003 and beyond.”

Big-name brands are jumping online in a big way. As these clients get online and start testing search to see the true marketing value, especially compared to their other (traditional) online marketing vehicles, expect to see much more of the share go to search engine marketing, he said.

David Fischer, U.S. Manager for AdWords Sales & Operations at Google, said that Google has come a long way from 1996. “We are projecting 5-8 years from now that this market will really expand – increased number of tools, increased levels of sophistication, and so forth. There is a much bigger world out there that we can educate and open up to all this space and have them be a large part of this growth.”

Fischer believes that Google has only scratched the surface so far. “We have had $5-6 billion in total online advertising spending this year,” he said. “Direct marketing still spends 8 times that amount. We must continually communicate the effectiveness and advantages our [search] industry to direct marketers and ad agencies.”

In the modern world, support workers who are able to mend networks and PC’s, and give daily advice to users, are vital in all areas of the economy. The nation’s requirement for increasing numbers of technically qualified people is growing, as we turn out to be ever more dependent on computers in the modern world.

‘Exam Guarantees’ are often bundled with training offers – they always involve paying for the exam fees up-front, before you’ve even made a start on the course. Before you get carried away with guaranteed exams, be aware of the facts:

Patently it isn’t free – you’re still paying for it – it’s just been included in your package price.

The fact is that if students pay for their own exams, one at a time, there’s a much better chance they’ll pass every time – since they’ll be conscious of their investment in themselves and therefore will put more effort into their preparation.

Isn’t it outrageous to have to pay the training college in advance for examinations? Find the best deal you can at the time, don’t pay mark-ups – and take it closer to home – instead of miles away at the college’s beck and call.

A lot of questionable training providers net big margins because they’re getting paid for all the exam fees up-front and hoping that you won’t take them all.

The majority of companies will insist that you take mock exams first and not allow you to re-take an exam until you’ve completely proven that you’re likely to pass – making an ‘exam guarantee’ just about worthless.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is remiss – when hard work, commitment and the right preparation via exam simulations is what will really see you through.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t question you thoroughly – it’s likely they’re actually nothing more than a salesman. If they’re pushing towards a particular product before getting to know your background and current experience level, then you know it’s true.

In some circumstances, the training start-point for someone experienced in some areas will be substantially different to the student with none.

If you’re a student commencing IT study from scratch, it can be useful to ease in gradually, kicking off with some basic user skills first. Usually this is packaged with most training packages.

When was the last time you considered the security of your job? Typically, this issue only becomes a talking point when we experience a knock-back. However, The cold truth is that our job security doesn’t really exist anymore, for most of us.

When we come across rising skills shortfalls and escalating demand though, we can discover a fresh type of security in the marketplace; driven by the conditions of constant growth, organisations just can’t get the influx of staff needed.

The 2006 national e-Skills study demonstrated that 26 percent of computing and IT jobs remain unfilled because of a huge deficit of appropriately certified professionals. Meaning that for every 4 jobs that exist throughout the computer industry, there are barely three qualified workers to fulfil that role.

This disturbing concept underpins an urgent requirement for more appropriately qualified computing professionals across the country.

Without a doubt, this really is such a perfect time for retraining into the IT industry.

Be careful that the exams you’re working towards will be recognised by employers and are up-to-date. The ‘in-house’ certifications provided by many companies are not normally useful in gaining employment.

All the major commercial players like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco each have nationally approved skills programs. These big-hitters can make sure you stand out at interview.

Nearly all aspiring web designers start their careers with Adobe Dreamweaver training. It's most likely the most used web-development environment in the world.

Nearly all aspiring web designers start their careers with Adobe Dreamweaver training. It’s most likely the most used web-development environment in the world.

We’d also suggest that students get an in-depth understanding of the entire Adobe Web Creative Suite, which incorporates Flash and Action Script, to be able to take advantage of Dreamweaver as a commercial web-designer. These skills can lead to becoming an Adobe Certified Expert or Adobe Certified Professional (ACE or ACP).

To become a well-rounded web professional however, there’s a lot more to learn. You will need to learn certain programming skills like HTML, PHP and MySQL. A working knowledge of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and E-Commerce will also give you a distinct advantage in the marketplace.

A study programme should always lead to a nationally (or globally) recognised accreditation as an end-goal – definitely not some ‘in-house’ diploma – fit only for filing away and forgetting.

From the perspective of an employer, only the big-boys such as Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA (to give some examples) will get you short-listed. Anything less just doesn’t cut the mustard.

A lot of men and women think that the state educational system is the way they should go. Why then is commercial certification beginning to overtake it?

As demand increases for knowledge about more and more complex technology, industry has had to move to the specialised training that the vendors themselves supply – in other words companies such as Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA. This usually turns out to involve less time and financial outlay.

In a nutshell, only that which is required is learned. It’s not quite as straightforward as that, but the principle remains that students need to cover the precise skills needed (including a degree of required background) – without going into too much detail in everything else (as degree courses are known to do).

Assuming a company knows what they’re looking for, then they simply need to advertise for a person with the appropriate exam numbers. The syllabuses all have to conform to the same requirements and aren’t allowed to deviate (in the way that degree courses can).

There is a tidal wave of change flooding technology in the near future – and this means greater innovations all the time.

Computing technology and connections through the web is going to dramatically shape the direction of our lives in the near future; incredibly so.

Let’s not forget that income in the IT industry throughout this country is noticeably higher than average salaries nationally, so in general you’ll more than likely receive significantly more as a trained IT professional, than you’d expect to earn elsewhere.

It would appear there is a lot more room for IT jobs growth throughout this country. The market sector continues to develop quickly, and as we have a significant shortage of skilled professionals, it’s not likely that it will even slow down for a good while yet.

The way in which your courseware is broken down for you isn’t always given the appropriate level of importance. How many stages do they break the program into? And in what order and how fast does each element come?

By and large, you’ll enrol on a course staged over 2 or 3 years and receive one element at a time until graduation. This may seem sensible until you think about these factors:

It’s not unusual for trainees to realise that the trainer’s standard order of study isn’t as suitable as another. You may find that a different order of study is more expedient. Perhaps you don’t make it at the pace they expect?

Put simply, the very best answer is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get everything up-front. It’s then all yours in the event you don’t complete everything quite as quick as they’d want.

Should you be wanting to study to get an MCSE, it’s likely you’ll come into one of two categories. You could be about to enter the computer sector, as it’s apparent this commercial sector has lots of demand for people with the right qualifications. Or you could be a knowledgeable person wanting to polish up your CV with the Microsoft qualification.

When researching MCSE’s, you’ll hit upon training companies that lower their out-goings by failing to provide the latest version from Microsoft. Avoid such training providers as you will face problems at exam time. If you are studying the wrong version, it will make it very difficult to pass.

Don’t get bullied into a course without the right advice. Find a training provider that will make sure that you’re on an appropriate training track for your requirements.

Consider only retraining programs which will lead to industry accepted accreditations. There’s an endless list of small companies pushing their own ‘in-house’ certificates which are worthless when it comes to finding a job.

From a commercial standpoint, only the big-boys like Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA (for instance) will get you into the interview seat. Nothing else makes the grade.

Many trainers will provide a useful Job Placement Assistance facility, to assist your search for your first position. However sometimes people are too impressed with this facility, for it is genuinely quite straightforward for any focused and well taught person to get a job in IT – as there is such a shortage of qualified personnel.

You would ideally have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; also we would encourage all students to update their CV the day they start training – don’t delay for when you’re ready to start work.

Various junior support jobs have been offered to trainees who are still learning and haven’t even passed a single exam yet. At the very least this will get your CV into the ‘possible’ pile and not the ‘no’ pile.

Normally you’ll get better performance from a specialist independent regional employment service than you’ll get from a training company’s centralised service, because they’ll know local industry and the area better.

Please make sure you don’t put hundreds of hours of effort into your studies, just to give up and leave it up to everyone else to secure your first position. Stop procrastinating and start looking for yourself. Invest as much time and energy into finding a good job as it took to get qualified.

Commercial certification is now, without a doubt, taking over from the traditional academic paths into the IT sector – but why should this be?

With the costs of academic degree’s becoming a tall order for many, and the IT sector’s increasing awareness that corporate based study is often far more commercially relevant, there’s been a dramatic increase in Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe accredited training programmes that create knowledgeable employees for considerably less.

University courses, for instance, can often get caught up in a lot of loosely associated study – and much too wide a syllabus. Students are then prevented from learning the core essentials in sufficient depth.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. All an employer has to do is know what areas need to be serviced, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. That way they can be sure they’re interviewing applicants who can do the job.

We can’t make a big enough deal out of this point: It’s essential to obtain proper 24×7 round-the-clock support from professional instructors. Later, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t heed this.

Find a good quality service with help available at any time of the day or night (no matter if it’s in the middle of the night on a weekend!) Make sure it’s always 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back during office hours.

World-class organisations utilise an online access round-the-clock system combining multiple support operations throughout multiple time-zones. You’ll have an easy to use environment which accesses the most appropriate office at any time of day or night: Support available as-and-when you want it.

If you accept anything less than direct-access 24×7 support, you’ll regret it. It may be that you don’t use it in the middle of the night, but consider weekends, late evenings or early mornings.

Should you fancy a web design career, then it's critical to study Adobe Dreamweaver.

Should you fancy a web design career, then it’s critical to study Adobe Dreamweaver.

The full Adobe Web Creative Suite ought also to be studied in-depth. Doing this will familiarise you in Action Script and Flash, amongst others, and means you’ll be in a position to take your Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) or Adobe Certified Professional (ACP) accreditation.

Creating a website is just the start of what you’ll need – in order to drive traffic, update content, and work on dynamic sites that are database driven, you will have to learn further programming skills, namely ones like HTML, PHP and MySQL. It would also be a good idea to develop a good understanding of Search Engine Optimisation and E Commerce.

One crafty way that training companies make extra profits is by charging for exams up-front and offering an exam guarantee. It looks impressive, but is it really:

You’ll be charged for it somehow. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – it’s simply been shoe-horned into the price as a whole.

Should you seriously need to qualify first ‘go’, you must fund each exam as you take it, give it the necessary attention and be ready for the task.

Sit the exam somewhere close to home and don’t pay up-front, but seek out the best deal for you when you’re ready.

Including money in your training package for examinations (and interest charges if you’re borrowing money) is insane. Resist being talked into filling the training company’s account with your hard-earned cash simply to help their cash-flow! There are those who hope that you won’t get to do them all – then they’ll keep the extra money.

It’s worth noting, with most ‘Exam Guarantees’ – the company controls how often and when you can do your re-takes. You will have to demonstrate an excellent pass-rate before they’ll approve a re-take.

Prometric and VUE exams are currently clocking in at an average of 112 pounds in the United Kingdom today. What’s the point of paying huge charges for ‘Exam Guarantees’ (most often hidden in the package) – when a quality course, support and consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

A top of the range package of training will undoubtedly incorporate accredited exam preparation packages.

Avoid relying on non-accredited exam preparation systems. Their phraseology can be quite different – and this leads to huge confusion in the actual examination.

As you can imagine, it’s very crucial to ensure that you’ve thoroughly prepared for your final certified exam before taking it. Revising mock-up exams logs the information in your brain and will avoid you getting frustrated with failed exams.

Beware of putting too much emphasis, like so many people do, on the accreditation program. Your training isn’t about getting a plaque on your wall; this is about employment. Begin and continue with the end in mind.

Never let yourself become one of the unfortunate masses who select a program that sounds really ‘interesting’ and ‘fun’ – and end up with a certification for an unrewarding career path.

Get to grips with the income level you aspire to and the level of your ambition. This will influence which accreditations will be expected and what industry will expect from you in return.

You’d also need help from a professional who can best explain the sector you think may suit you, and is able to give you ‘A day in the life of’ synopsis for each job considered. All of these things are of paramount importance as you’ll need to know whether or not you’ve chosen correctly.

Talk to any capable advisor and they’ll entertain you with many awful tales of students who’ve been sold completely the wrong course for them. Stick to someone that asks some in-depth questions to discover the most appropriate thing for you – not for their bank-account! You need to find the right starting point of study for you.

If you have a strong background, or sometimes a little commercial experience (some certifications gained previously perhaps?) then it could be that your starting point will be different from a student that is completely new to the industry.

For students starting IT studies and exams for the first time, it can be useful to ease in gradually, kicking off with a user-skills course first. This can easily be incorporated into most training programs.

Four separate areas of study make up a full CompTIA A+; you’re thought of as competent at A+ when you’ve gained exams for 2 out of 4 subjects. For this reason, the majority of training establishments offer only two of the training courses. In reality it’s necessary to have the teaching in all areas as many jobs will ask for an awareness of the whole A+ program. It isn’t necessary to qualify in them all, although it would seem prudent that you at least have a working knowledge of every area.

Once you start your A+ computer training course you will develop an understanding of how to work in antistatic conditions and build and fix computers. You’ll also cover fault-finding and diagnostic techniques, both remotely and via direct access.

You might also choose to think about adding the CompTIA Network+ training as you can then also take care of computer networks, which means greater employment benefits.

Many training companies only give basic 9am till 6pm support (maybe a little earlier or later on certain days); very few go late in the evening or at weekends.

Avoid, like the plague, any organisations which use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – with your call-back scheduled for standard office hours. It’s not a lot of help when you’ve got study issues and need help now.

The very best programs tend to use an online 24 hours-a-day service combining multiple support operations throughout multiple time-zones. You will be provided with a simple environment which accesses the most appropriate office irrespective of the time of day: Support when you need it.

If you opt for less than online 24×7 support, you’ll quickly find yourself regretting it. You may not need it in the middle of the night, but consider weekends, early mornings or even late evenings at some point.

Remember: the actual training or an accreditation isn’t what this is about; the particular job that you want to end up in is. Far too many training organisations put too much weight in the qualification itself.

Avoid becoming one of the unfortunate masses who choose a training program that seems ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ – and get to the final hurdle of an accreditation for something they’ll never enjoy.

You need to keep your eye on where you want to go, and formulate your training based on that – avoid getting them back-to-front. Keep on track – making sure you’re training for something you’ll still be enjoying many years from now.

Obtain help from an industry professional who appreciates the market you’re interested in, and will be able to provide ‘A typical day in the life of’ synopsis of what you’ll actually be doing day-to-day. It’s sensible to understand whether or not this is right for you long before you commence your studies. After all, what is the point in kicking off your training only to discover you’re on the wrong course.

Getting into your first IT role sometimes feels easier to handle if you’re supported with a Job Placement Assistance program. The need for this feature can be bigged up out of proportion though – it’s quite easy for eager sales people to overplay it. Ultimately, the still growing need for IT personnel in this country is what will make you attractive to employers.

However, don’t procrastinate and wait until you have finished your training before polishing up your CV. As soon as you start studying, enter details of your study programme and get promoting!

It’s possible that you won’t have even taken your exams when you land your first junior support role; but this isn’t going to happen unless your CV is with employers.

The most reliable organisations to help you find a job are normally local IT focused employment agencies. Because they make their money when they’ve found you a job, they’ll work that much harder to get a result.

Many people, apparently, conscientiously work through their course materials (for years sometimes), only to give up at the first hurdle when finding a job. Market yourself… Do everything you can to put yourself out there. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.

Throw out the typical salesman who offers any particular course without an in-depth conversation so as to understand your abilities plus your experience level. They should be able to select from a generous product range so they’re actually equipped to give you an appropriate solution.

If you have a strong background, or maybe some commercial experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then obviously your starting level will be very different from someone with no background whatsoever.

If this is going to be your opening crack at an IT exam then you may want to start with a user-skills course first.

An Internet domain name is a string of typographic characters used to describe the location of a specific individual, business, computer, or piece of information online. Formally known as the Uniform Resource Locator or URL, it is often considered to be the address of a certain World Wide Web site. Obtaining an Internet domain name is a vital step for small businesses hoping to establish a presence on the Internet. “To be a major league team in the Internet game, your business will want a domain name of its own, ” Vince Emery wrote in How to Grow Your Business on the Internet. “These valuable intellectual assets … make the difference in your image between Internet pro and fumbling amateur. Your domain name is more than your address. It tells the world who you are and what you are.

A typical domain name consists of several parts. As an example, consider an auto parts business with the domain www.spareparts.com. The letters www. before the domain name mean that what follows describes the location of a site on the World Wide Web. The last two or three letters of a URL are known as its top-level domain. About 250 top-level domains existed on the Internet as of the year 2000. Some of the most common top-level domains include .com, which usually indicates a business or commercial site; .org, which generally describes a nonprofit, charity, or cultural organization site; .gov, which indicates a governmental site; and .net, which is most often used by network-related businesses. Other common top-level domains are country codes, like .us for United States and .au for Australia. Small businesses can put as many subdomains as needed in front of their domain names. For example, the customer service department of the aforementioned auto parts business might be designated as www.service.spareparts.com.

Internet domain names are fairly easy and inexpensive to obtain. The process of registering a domain name involves searching to see if the desired name is already taken, filling out a form online, and paying a fee of $100 or so. But small businesses may find it exceedingly difficult to secure the exact domain name they want. As Jacqueline Emigh noted in Computer-world, the supply of available domain names is dwindling rapidly, particularly in the popular .com toplevel domain. In some cases, the best domain names are simply already being used by other individuals or firms. Some larger businesses will register several different domain names in case they might be needed in the future, or in order to protect themselves against competing sites. But in other cases, the best domain names are held by cybersquatters or cyberpirates. These individuals register a number of domain names that are likely to be coveted by businesses in hopes of selling them in the future for a significant profit. The U.S. government and several international authorities are beginning to crack down on the activities of cybersquatters.

Choosing and Registering a Domain Name

For small businesses hoping to establish a presence on the World Wide Web, choosing an Internet domain name is nearly as important as choosing a company name. The name must fit the firm’s overall marketing strategy and convey a positive message to potential customers. In addition to registering a domain name for the company’s Web site, small business owners might also consider registering the names of major products, important markets, or well-known slogans. As Bill Roberts explained in Electronic Business, small business owners must make sure that the domain names they choose are not overly long and avoid unconventional spellings that may be difficult for people to remember. Since doing business on the Internet immediately exposes companies to international markets, it is also important to be careful of trademark infringement issues and cultural problems in other languages.

There are a number of ways to handle the registration of an Internet domain name. In most cases, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) can register a small business’s domain name and maintain the company’s Web site on its server. The ISP can conduct an online search to make sure that the domain name does not duplicate any existing name or infringe on the trademark of any other business. Although registering through an ISP can simplify the process for small businesses, it is important for the business to secure ownership of the domain name. Otherwise, it may be difficult to keep the domain name if the company decides to change ISPs.

Small business owners can also register a domain name through Network Solutions Inc. (NSI), a private company which began registering names in 1993 through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. government. The process involves conducting a free online search, filling out a form on the NSI Web site (networksolutions.com), and paying a fee of approximately $70 for two years of ownership. Finally, small businesses can register domain names through the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a nonprofit organization that has been taking over increased responsibility for the registration process (details are available online at www.icann.org).

With authority from the U.S. government, ICANN has begun addressing the problems of Internet site registration, including the diminishing supply of domain names and the resolution of disputes over names. As Walter Eidson outlined in the Washington Business Journal, ICANN implemented a new dispute resolution policy on January 1, 2000, to settle questions over ownership and use of popular domain names. In order to dispute another party’s use of a domain name, a small business must prove that the name is identical or confusingly similar to a previously registered trademark and that the other party has no legitimate business interest in it. Businesses are unlikely to prevail in such disputes if the other party had registered the name in good faith and was using it for legitimate purposes. But businesses do have recourse in cases where the other party is using the name in bad faith—for example, holding it for the purpose of selling it, blocking the legitimate owner from using it, or attracting customers through deception.

It’s no secret that there’s a lot of money involved with affiliate marketing. This is only true however, for those who are serious and hard working on their affiliate program. The biggest part of succeeding depends on your perseverance and determination.

Even the best of affiliate programs won’t prosper if you don’t build the business on a solid foundation.Nothing happens if the banners and links you place on a website just decorates the pages. The affiliate must convince visitors to click on the banner or link then proceed to the program to buy products.

Affiliate marketing can be easy if you have planned your campaign well and have taken the right steps towards success. Choosing the right product and
designing your website with banners and the right material are keys to making things happen.

An ad tracker is a software program that will allow you to trace and monitor every click that is made by visitors through your referral link. To make
things even better, you know exactly where you placed the link. You can either use a service provider or purchase ad tracking software.

With ad trackers, you can monitor the progress of your campaigns, even advertising offline. If you have several affiliate accounts, this tool
can be very good to have.

Each and every decision you make should be well grounded in facts. By using an ad tracker, you’ll be able to generate traffic reports for your
personal sales page. Armed with the proper knowledge and an ad tracking software program, you’ll have no problems succeeding in the
affiliate marketing world. It can be tough to get started – although once you start making money you’ll be glad you took the chance!
