Acer is a computer manufacturer based in Taiwan. They initially started operating in’76 using the name Multitech and eleven year later, in’87 the company was renamed to Acer. Acer laptops are the most popular in- countries around the globe: Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Russia, Portugal, Poland, Hungary, the Slovak Republic and Denmark.

Their share of the market in Europe is still increasing all the time. They have not been as successful in America though – so that country is a major future growth area.

The reason why Acer laptops are so popular cannot be anything else than that the company has managed to maintain a persistently high level of quality and after sales service. Their laptops are very user friendly yet technologically highly advanced. The range include the Acer Ferrari, the Acer Travelmate and the Acer Aspire.

The Acer Ferrari is their top model. (Acer has of course been very much involved with the Ferrari racing team over the years). This is the laptop for the professional. It offers a wide, high resolution screen(15. 4 inches) – 1Gb of RAM, high performance CPU, a multi purpose flash card slot and a tray-less dual layer optical drive. The design is beautiful and modern. This is the ultimate option for those requiring top performance, high speed and good looks.

The Acer Travelmate is a top performer. It is a highly portable notebook – it is a sleek lightweight machine with very good connectivity. This should be the laptop of choice of you are on the road often – irrespective if you are working for a small company or a large corporate giant. And if you are a self-employed accountant or other professional who regularly need a laptop when visiting clients, this is the best choice you can make. It used Intel’s CentrinoT technology for mobile computers and therefore offers all the power and performance of a larger machine in a small package.

The Acer Aspire is an excellent laptop for someone who needs something really versatile. It comes with all the speed, functions and power of many laptops which cost a lot more. If you are therefore going to use your laptop for both business and personal purposes, it would be hard to think of a better option than an the Aspire. It feels equally at home doing a Powerpoint presentation at the office of one of your clients than when you are watching a YouTube video with the children. It is not difficult to understand why it has become a stalwart in the Acer range.

In terms of value for money, it is hard to beat Acer laptops. These are not watered down budget computers using technology of five years ago – they are advanced machines offering everything a modern laptop user needs. They look great, they are sturdy and buying one won’t break the bank. To other computer manufacturers they were probably the worst nightmare to hit the market since Dracula.

We received our Acer Aspire One 10.1 netbook about a month ago. I LOVE this little guy. It has already gone on two trips that we would normally take the larger and heavier laptop, and this was convenient and easy to carry weighing in at least 3 pounds lighter than our 14″ Acer.

One thing that has really been a pleasure is the battery life – this thing goes at least 8 hours non-stop. We had a delay in the airport of 6 hours and it just kept going, we used it through a seminar for about 5 1/2 hours and it just kept going. It is great! I carry it around the house using it for different reasons, and am now able to truly say I am ‘mobile’. My other laptop is cumbersome compared to this.

I also love the number of usb ports available, the webcam, microphone, a nice size hard drive – basically everything you want but in a small, good-looking package.

I have to say I was not a fan of going back to NT from Vista, but I figure we will upgrade eventually. Vista actually has better security options than NT does (or at least what I am aware of).

This little dynamo is going to Europe this summer. It is going to get to see the world!

Do you think retail is still impacted by recession? Jan sale looked promising, however it seems there is cautious optimism with many retail chains in the throes of recession. Wal-Mart has just downsized close to 14,000 employees! What is your opinion?
